The advent of talking pictures allowed directors such as Frank Capra and Howard Hawks and writers like Garson Kanin to create memorable banter and repartee. Some are from the 1920s, and others from the 1980s. The AFI list begs the question of whether films from one era should be compared with another. The genre is so important that the American Film Institute has its own list of best comedies–“AFI’s 100 YEARS…100 LAUGHS the 100 funniest american movies of all time.” “Some Like It Hot” was released in 1959 and starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon tops their list. Early screen stars included Buster Keaton, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, Harold Lloyd, and at the top of the list genius Charlie Chaplin. Among the most famous early American films were comedies.
